The potentially brilliant Mazda2 made it all the way through passing US crash safety and emissions standards before it was pulled from the lineup.
Mazda said that it saw more potential demand for a subcompact crossover, and the CX-3 was put on the lineup instead.
Toyota got the Mazda2 instead - now known as the Yaris iA sedan.
Year to date, Mazda has moved 7600 CX-3s, down 20% from last year, in a market that can’t get enough of crossovers.
Toyota, on the other hand, has sold 19,000 Yaris iAs, up 14% from last year, in a market that hates sedans.
Now, Mazda is surely making some profits off the iA sales - but the satisfied buyers of the iA are probably more likely to buy Toyota in the future. How many of them even know that its all Mazda except for the fascia?
Great job Mazda, really.

The reason they don’t sell any CX-3's is it’s a hunk of shit. Driven two, hated two. Super fussy yet vanilla at the same time with all the negatives of any compact crossover. They really hit for the cycle on this one.
I adore Mazda but their lineup is trash

Of course we don’t know if they would have sold as well for Mazda, people may just be looking for a cheap Toyota.

You mean the Yaris sedan?

I would look at a 6 if I wanted a midsize sedan but the rest of their lineup isn’t great.

I was wondering why I hadn’t seen more of those CX-3 - I think they look great, smaller but good for “urban” folk that don’t want a hatch, but really want a hatch. But if they are junk... Wonder how many HRVs Honda is selling.

It’s has less usable space, is less functional, and less efficient than a Mazda3. My 3-door Focus fits in more parking spaces, is more comfortable for any number of people from 1 to 5, and has more cargo space. But it’s not a crossover so it’s worthless.

I know Mazda’s trying to put more emphasis on addressing their quality issues but I do pine for when Mazdas used to be the “driver’s choice” in affordable cars. It set them apart from the major Japanese companies since they tried to be innovative with their products like supercharged Miller Cycle engines, aftermarket head unit and speakers as standard (but then is it really aftermarket?), and...Miatas!
Mazda really needs to get back into the light pickup truck game.

They really should sell the Mazda2 HB in the US. It’d sell twice as many as the iA.
Nobody understands the youth and cheapskate markets in the US.

Yeah I owned a 2014 mazda2 and sold mazdas for a couple years and I kind of have to disagree. I loved my 2 and would buy a skyactiv one in a heartbeat to where I’ve actually looked into getting one from PR since they’re federally legal, but even as an identical car the iA is always gonna massively outsell the 2. Add in a more powerful “crossover” version that can be had fwd or awd and the 2 would be doomed anyways, I never sold a single mazda2 in over a year. They’re too similar and the US market obviously favors the cx3, you can’t compare sales of any mazda to a Toyota, it’s all the #brand. The cx3 is similar enough for the people who would actually buy a 2 and draws crossover buyers as well, the iA is a toyota nuff said. No way a new mazda2 sells 10,000 even in it’s first year. Plus the base mazda 3 is better in just about every way and only gives up a couple mpg and was only a couple grand more, there really is just no case for it in the US.

No way it sells a quarter of that. Anybody that would want a 2 is just as happy with a 3 or cx3, the iA is for people who want a corolla or camry.

They’re fine little cars I like them and would consider one, only major gripe is a truly awful armrest that the old 2 also had.

Fine, want to compare within the same brand?
At this point in 2014, Mazda moved nearly 8000 Mazda2s.
The CX3 can’t even beat the Mazda2 in sales.

Honda has sold nearly 47,000 HRVs so far this year, up 28%.

It doesn’t need to sell better than the old mazda2, just better than a new mazda2 WOULD sell and I still think it does. You make it sound like that’s 19,000 people who wanted a mazda2 and were forced to buy an iA instead but i think it’s 19,000 who wanted a corolla or Camry. There’s no possible way to deny the market shift, even just since 2014, and mazda as an independent brand needs to take the safe bets.
